Millennials and Gambling

Many millennials are increasingly being targeted by casinos throughout the country. Over the course of the last two years, millennials have been gambling in land based casinos less and less and when they do they don’t spend as much money as they used to. Many millennials have turned to online casinos because they find them to be more entertaining and ultimately, more satisfying.

One reason for this seems to be that millennials are used to being in control of their entertainment. Since most games at land based casinos have traditionally been games of chance, millennials tend to avoid them because they prefer skill based games. Land based casinos are also rolling out interactive video game type entertainment for millennials because most millennials grew up playing video games and enjoy the interaction that comes with them.

Since millennials are more interested in interactive casino games than any other generation has been, land based casino operators have been unhappy that most millennials have little to no interest in playing slot machines.

An issue that casino operators are facing is the somewhat misguided notion that millennials don’t gamble much in Las Vegas because there are so many other things to do. The general consensus among those in the know is that millennials wouldn’t even visit Las Vegas if not for the nightlife it has to offer, having nothing to do with gambling.

As millennials have full access to casino games online they realize that gambling at land based casinos doesn’t pay out often enough to make it worth the risk. This is an advantage that previous generations did not have, and one that is hurting many land based casinos in business today. When millennials do gamble they are primarily doing it to hang out with friends as opposed to doing it simply to win money.

Nevada and New Jersey are two states that have recognized the value of getting millennials to gamble. As a result, both states have implemented legislation that allows their casinos to roll out new skill based games. The theory behind these games states that savvy players will win skill based games more often than others will win luck based games. Japan has already introduced skill based games into its casinos, with much success.

Casinos throughout the U.S. are also struggling to attract millennials who will gamble because many millennials have figured out that land based casinos are known for nickling and diming their gamblers to death.

Some casinos are rolling out electronic table games in an effort to attract millennials for gambling, such as the Sands Casino located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The diversity of millennials is proving to be a struggle for most land based casinos. Millennials seem to be more interested in activities such as sports betting and online Poker than in more traditional casino games. However, it is inevitable that there are millennials that have no interest in sports betting or online Poker. This means that the stereotypes of millennials are causing much confusion.
